Penrhadw Farm is being sensitively reimagined, transforming existing buildings and outdoor spaces around the original farmstead. Rather than a single urban style development, each element has a clear purpose, and together they work as one coherent place to stay, eat and explore.

Our proposals are subject to planning consent from Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority, and details may evolve as the design is refined with feedback and comments from residents and local businesses.

Here you can learn about the project, view our plans and see what we hope will be the finished results with our new Barn Restaurant and Lounge Bar, Garden Terrace and outdoor areas and the Ty Vaynor Hotel Building

The Farmhouse - a characterful place to stay

The historic farmhouse at Penrhadw will be carefully restored and sensitively extended to create the core of the farm, with a modest number of suites. The feel is more “large, comfortable country house” than big hotel.

  • Suites

A mix of suites in the original farmhouse and new barn, designed to make the most of light, views and the existing building forms. Interiors will combine traditional materials with contemporary comfort – good beds, proper showers, natural finishes.

  • Shared spaces

The farmhouse will also house the main recption and include quiet sitting areas, the snug and cosy corners where guests can read, work, or simply enjoy the view over the Taf Fechan valley.

  • Year-round use

The hotel is designed to work in all seasons – roaring fires and shelter in winter; outdoor terraces, garden doors and open views in spring and summer.

Local residents, visitors and hotel guests will be at the core of Penrhadw, but the wider restaurant and bar spaces are also designed as much for big events as a regular afternoon or evening out.

Barn Restaurant, seasonal food, local produce, open to all - Penrhadw will be creating the culinary heart of the project.

  • Design & atmosphere

Expect high ceilings, exposed structure, warm materials and generous windows framing views across the valley. The aim is a space that feels both special and relaxed – somewhere you can come for a celebration dinner or a simple mid-week meal.

  • Food philosophy

    The menu will focus on:

    • Welsh and local produce

    • Seasonal dishes that reflect the landscape and time of year

    • A balance of comforting classics and lighter, modern plates

  • For guests and locals

The Barn Restaurant will be open to hotel guests, local residents and visitors to the National Park. We want it to become a genuine “destination restaurant” for Pontsticill and Vaynor, not an inward-facing hotel dining room.

Lounge Bar, a relaxed space from morning coffee to nightcap - Next to the restaurant, will be a more informal, flexible space for drinks, coffee and lighter bites.

  • All-day use - Open from morning through to the evening for:

    • Coffee and cakes after a walk

    • A quiet drink by the fire

    • Pre- and post-dinner cocktails

    • A place to meet friends or neighbours

  • Comfortable, intimate feel

The bar will be deliberately modest in scale – with soft seating, a real sense of warmth and a strong connection to both the courtyard and the views beyond.

  • Open door for the village

We intend the Lounge Bar to be a welcoming space for local residents as well as hotel guests – somewhere you can drop in without needing a full meal.

Garden Grill - Outdoor dining, relaxed and seasonal. Alongside the Barn Restaurant and Lounge Bar, the Garden Grill will provide a more casual, outdoor-facing option – ideal for sunny days, long evenings and family gatherings.

  • Al fresco

The Garden Grill will spill out onto a terrace overlooking the gardens and wider valley, with:

    • Outdoor seating and planting

    • Simple, grill-based menus

    • Wood-fired pizzas

    • A relaxed, informal atmosphere

  • Seasonal and weather-aware

Designed as family family-focused and relaxed environment, plus dog-friendly, so it can be used comfortably outside the peak of spring and summer, while still respecting the area’s dark-sky and tranquillity.

  • Events and gatherings

From small celebrations to occasional community events, the Garden Grill provides a flexible outdoor space that can be adapted to make the best of our incredible views and location.

Gardens & Lnadscape, farmyard to gardens, meadows and woodland and the spaces between and around the buildings are just as important as the buildings themselves. The landscape strategy at Penrhadw is to:

  • Turn the immediate surroundings of the farmhouse and barns into planted gardens, courtyards and terraces.

  • Transition quickly into meadows, hedgerows and woodland edges as you move away from the core buildings.

  • Link everything into a network of paths and viewpoints that make the most of the site’s topography and views.

Key elements include:

  • Courtyard & farmhouse gardens

    • A welcoming arrival garden courtyard with robust, attractive planting.

    • Garden spaces for hotel guests and restaurant visitors to sit, walk and explore.

  • Meadows & orchard areas

    • Improved grassland and meadow areas supporting pollinators and biodiversity.

    • Potential for small orchard or kitchen-garden elements feeding into the restaurant.

  • Woodland edges & hedgerows

    • Strengthening existing hedgerows, planting new ones and creating wildlife corridors.

    • New trees and woodland edges that frame views without blocking them.

  • Paths & viewpoints

    • Carefully designed routes across the site offering short strolls and longer loops.

    • Benches and quiet spots to sit and take in the landscape.

Ty Vaynor

The two existing holiday cottages will be brought together with a central extension, creating the Ty Vaynor Building. This will house sixteen guest bedrooms in total, arranged on the ground and first floors.

The building will also house a guest lounge within the new central extension, creating a quiet space for guests to work from or relax away from our main areas.

Accessibility

Creating a welcoming, inclusive experience is a core part of the Penrhadw Farm masterplan. We are designing the site so that guests and visitors of all ages and abilities can move comfortably between the main arrival points, the hotel buildings, and the gardens and grounds.

Accessibility is being built into the layout from the start, rather than added as an afterthought. The intention is to provide level, step-free routes connecting key parts of the estate, with thoughtful gradients, clear wayfinding and safe surfaces that feel appropriate in a National Park setting.

Our accessibility commitments include:

  • Level access pathways from the main car park to:

    • The Farmhouse

    • The Ty Vaynor building

    • The gardens and grounds

  • An accessibility lift from the Farmhouse, supporting step-free movement through guest areas and linking into the wider network of accessible routes.

  • Dedicated disabled parking located close to both key arrival points:

  • Fully accessible public areas, including:

    • The Farmhouse area of the car park

    • The Ty Vaynor area of the car park

Each with clear, level access to entrances.

      Fully accessible public areas, including:

    • The bars

    • The Barn Restaurant

    • The Lounge Bar

    • The Garden Grill and terrace areas (where levels and detailed design allow)

  • Accessible guest accommodation and bathrooms, designed to provide comfort, dignity and ease of use, and integrated naturally into the overall hotel offer.

As detailed designs progress, we will continue to work with our consultants to ensure the access strategy is compliant, well signposted and easy to navigate, while still respecting the character, topography and landscape sensitivities of the site. Our aim is simple: Penrhadw should feel high-quality and relaxing for everyone, with accessibility thoughtfully woven into the everyday experience of staying, dining and enjoying the estate.
